GAME CLOSURE

Hello, everyone!

We've been together for six months now and it's been a great time. We've seen a lot of great story arcs played out, neat plot ideas, and characters we've loved to see interact. We want to thank you for all your contributions to the game, your fun plot beats, and your energy.

Unfortunately, at this time, our moderator staff is too busy to keep up with the obligations of running a game, and instead of continuing at a pace we can't sustain, we have elected to close.

The communities will stay available and everyone is free to use them as long as you'd like, but there will be no more events, AC or general moderation. Story-wise, a crash during a planet's Purge was a disaster for the Navarch's rep within the Admiralty — you can assume some characters either went back home, or were reassigned to another ship to continue their work.

Thank you again so much for your time with us, and maybe we'll see each other around in other games!

Jenn, Nix and Tam.

PORT: EMERGENCY LANDING

June 25th, 2022 – July 4th, 2022

Something's gone wrong.

On June 25th, the Navarch makes an announcement — not over the CommLinks, but the ship's PA system. It might surprise you to find the ship has a PA system, but her tone is brisk, businesslike.

She announces that the Peregrine is making an emergency landing, on the nearby planet of Pugreo. And in under half an hour, the ship lands heavily — crashes, it might be more accurate to say — in the middle of an abandoned amusement park. Or, well, at least a closed amusement park.

Passengers will find themselves stranded for 10 days, while the maintenance crew and associated bots work on repairs. Wardens and inmates alike will be asked to secure resources and guard the Peregrine against the locals, though those with the means to assist crew in other ways won't be refused.

You can use this post for any OOC plotting! If you have any questions about the event, please ask here. You can familiarize yourself with port basics on our events page (though this event will feature some departures).

Port Statuses

Money: Unlike previous ports, no one will have any funds for the location. Preparing for ports takes time and resources, of which the Peregrine and its crew had precious little this time around. To acquire goods, you'll have to barter, hunt, or resort to other means.

Overboarding: If your character goes overboard, maybe thrown off the observation deck or too close to a hull breach, they'll be a local or an off-world visitor, here for...ah, the sights and reputation of Pugreo.

Cloaking: None, this round. The ATVs are uncloaked and passengers are unchanged.

Culture: The native population is human and aware of space travel, though their technology is on the primitive end for space flight. Still, the city folk are very excited the Peregrine happened to show up now! There's a heavy emphasis on wealth and weapons-trading, and architecture is defense-focused, pocked with rebar and molded over by concrete. Thick walls surround wealthier and better maintained areas. Civilians typically aren't armed, except during an upcoming holiday, which some off-worlders treat as a tourist attraction.

The Purge: The holiday in question, wherein all crime — including murder — is decriminalized until its end. Its exact date varies by location, because it's linked to the blooming of a specific flower native to Pugreo. Known as the Deathbed Blossom, it releases a nearly ubiquitous pollen that affects a person's proclivity for violence. Under its influence, someone is much more likely to use force to solve problems, or pick fight over flight. Its effectiveness varies, from merely lowering someone's inhibitions to full on encouraging murder.

Climate: The Peregrine went down in a temperate region, similar to a vernal broadleaf forest. The current weather is mild and mostly pleasant, with the occasional drizzle, but there is a lot of pollen, so mind yourself if you have allergies. Nighttime is chilly; best to take a jacket.

Landmarks, Animals, and Objects of Interest

Andalia — A nearby city, featuring the typical amenities: homes, shops, a park, library, emergency services, etc. It's heavily fortified and surrounded by a concrete wall, so there are only two easy ways inside. On the west end of the city, there's an old shopping center that has been transformed into a checkpoint between civilization and the forest; walk through and the wildflowers transform into tiled floor. On the east end is an abandoned manor that sits near the park; find the right tunnel, hidden in the amusement park, and it leads right up.

Tunnels — Originally sewage, some of the exposed pipes still spill water wherever they open up, whether it's in a craggy rock face in the forest, the basement of an old manor, or an empty theater.

Forest — The flora of Pugreo is green and gold, shot through with veins of purple. Trees at the forest's edge are smaller, with rusty bark and glittering leaves, but they're larger deeper in the woods. Some grow to truly impressive dimensions, like the sequoias of Earth. There are ruins scattered about, crumbling bridges strung across rapid waters; it's notable there aren't any defensive walls here. Travel far enough and there are some homes built high into the trees, but unlike the city dwellers, the inhabitants are hostile to outsiders.

Deathbed Blossom — Spread throughout the forest are a large number of flowers, many of them still buds. Some are huge, larger than a human head, and surrounded by thin leaves like spikes; these are the Deathbed Blossom. A day or so after the Peregrine lands, the vibrant orange petals bloom and release their pollen.

Wildlife — The most dangerous animals in the area (besides humans) are wild dogs; there are no terrestrial creatures larger than them, though there are eight-legged dragonflies that creep up to a foot in length. Centipedes get even bigger and spiders average about the size of a dinner plate. There are bat-like animals that specialize in hunting them, though they aren't big enough to seriously harm a human on their own.

Amusement Park — Located outside the city walls, north of the forest. It features a main square, a truly impressive variety of rides, and a theater. Venture into the basement and you might find a passage that opens into the tunnels. The Peregrine itself sits nearby, beyond the steel tangle of a coaster.

ATV Campsite — In order to better collect supplies, the Navarch has deployed both ATVs as transport and housing, along with camping gear. While passengers are free to stay aboard the Peregrine, amenities are poor and a good deal of power is rerouted to repairs. Also, it's just easier for passengers to keep a lookout from the outside of the ship, so a small campground has been set aside near the Peregrine.

Hi everyone! It's Jenn.

This here is Tess from The Last of Us. She is, gasp, a warden, as she graduated from the other ship. She's not nice but she is kind. She has very high expectations but is learning to raise her standards. She originally lived in a military state in the zombie apocalypse circa 2033, but post-graduation has been living her best life as a bounty hunter in the Southern U.S. circa 1900. (Eat your heart out, Claire.) She is looking forward to a shower and not having to ride horses every damn day, but not so much being separated from her partner, who is her former warden. (See, inmates, graduation means getting to build yourself a very nice little life! You can have it all!) However, she still wants a deal for her home world, which is, you know, still ravaged by fucking fungus zombies.

As always you can reach me on plurk at victoryfanfare. :)

Hey everyone, I'm Ven and I'm bringing in Carol Denning (flashback edition) from Orange is the New Black! She spent a few months in Last Voyages and is coming here as a still-almost-0%-redeemed CRAU, here to cause trouble.

Carol's a very nasty lady, she and her older sister Barb teamed up to murder their younger sister Debbie, didn't get away with it, and then started a massive deadly gang war with each other after they were sent to prison for life. She's young but she fancies herself a badass gang leader who doesn't take shit from anyone. Including wardens. Especially wardens. And she's more than happy to start shit and get violent with anyone who gets in her way.

Feel free to add me on plurk @ [plurk.com profile] venoms. I look forward to playing with you all!

MINI-EVENT: MIMICS

May 28th – June 1st, 2022

So Bhujerba was a nice little break, right? The Navarch was also kind enough to arrange for the ship crew to onboard some goods for the wardens and inmates to use on their journey, and have it delivered to the storage facility for later use.

Except oops: some of it is now missing! Seeing as shipping containers don't just walk off on their own, someone must have pinched it. Passengers will have to figure out what happened to the missing freight. (And surprise, the Peregrine accidentally took on some Mimics — large insects that pose as Bhujerban shipping containers. But what's a little conflict between wardens and inmates over who is responsible, huh?)

This plotting post is also going to be a little different from the others. We'd like you to reply here with some items your character would want from home (feel free to give us multiple ideas). We'll matchmake those items with a character who will eventually find it, and try to direct it to its rightful owner. RNG threads! Who doesn't love a good RNG thread?

An event log will go up shortly. You can use this post for any OOC plotting! If you have any questions about the event, please ask here.

GAME UPDATE

Hello, passengers! Just a quick update from the mods.
  • We have updated our FAQ and Peregrine pages! The information is the same, just gently reorganized.
  • We've overhauled the Applications page, to clarify and streamline our process. We stripped out some extraneous components and set a hard cap for length.
  • After some deliberation, we have increased our franchise cap to five (5) characters. Player-created and tabletop OCs will count as a single franchise with this update.
  • For the sake of newer players, we'd like to remind and encourage players to make use of our Activities page, if your character has any particular habits around the ship that you'd like to share.
  • We have some upcoming adjustments to our events page, mostly pertaining to missions (these will be announced ICly).
If you have any questions, feel free to comment here. Thank you and here's to the adventures ahead!

PORT: THE SKY-CITY OF BHUJERBA

returnjourney: (Default)

PORT: THE SKY-CITY OF BHUJERBA

May 4th, 2022 – May 11th, 2022

Welcome, bhadra, to the city-state of Bhujerba! The Peregrine is due to touch down on May 4th, in a proper port — airships are the only way on and off the city, so the Aerodrome is a busy and bustling place. As a sky-city built on a mountainous structure floating ten thousand feet above the ground, it has little in the way of wilderness, but it has a sprawling city with deep mines stretching down beneath it. Look down past the railings when the thick clouds part and you'll see the world below; look up and you'll see great blue crystalline structures, a mark of the deep magicks that keep the city in the sky.

Passengers will be here for one week. Their duties in port will be to stretch their legs, experience the local culture, and pick up anything handy for their continued work on the Peregrine. The Navarch has secured passengers some rooms above a local tavern for those who do not want to trek on-and-off the ship to sleep.

The Navarch will announce the port the day before landing, along with any additional details. A log will follow.

You can use this post for any OOC plotting! If you have any questions about the event, please ask here. You can familiarize yourself with port basics on our events page.

Port Statuses

Money: Wardens will have their usual spending allotment. This planet uses a currency called gil, struck coins in various sizes and precious metals. While the coins are fairly uniform in size and style, they are struck with different rulers from around the world. Inmates get their usual "taxi fare" amount, which will get them a ride to the Aerodrome on a rickshaw.

Overboarding: If your character is going overboard, they can be a local, a visitor from another part of Ivalice, a sky-pirate, a laid-off miner, a merchant, another species, or anything you can imagine.

Cloaking: The Peregrine appears to be a light cruiser airship while sitting in the Aerodrome. The ATVs are largely unnecessary this time around, but should the wardens wish to take them out, they are cloaked to look like carts drawn by giant yellow birds.

Technology: The sky-city has some technology, but it's very mechanical and powered entirely by magicite, stones that contain highly concentrated magical power. There is no computerization. This magicite, should passengers get their hands on it, gives off tremendous energy when heated; a single stone could run a massive airship for six months. In irresponsible hands, it could simply make smaller machines explode.

Culture: Bhujerba is a highly diverse place, full of merchants and traders from kingdoms all over the planet, but decades of colonization has all sorts mingling with ease. There are numerous species: run-of-the-mill humans, the hefty piglike Seeq, the reptilian Bangaa, and the diminutive and rabbit-like Moogles. Dress is colourful and frequently revealing garb, often with light leather and metal armor. Architecture is sprawling and built with dedicated craftsmanship; even the humblest, smallest building are adorned with mosaic tiles, engraved stone, and hand-worked metal decorations. The Bhujerban dialect intermingles with the common tongue, which Earthlings may recognize as similar to Indic languages.

Climate: Bhujerba is tropical, so this time of year you can expect a lot of heat and humidity!

Landmarks, Animals, and Objects of Interest

The Politics — The city-state is ruled over by a Marquis, who has made it his life's mission to maintain the neutrality of the city — many other nations of this world are at war or being actively consumed by it, and Bhujerba is well-known for brokering peace treaties between them. Closer to home, there is some tension about the closure of the Lhusu Mines, the richest source of magicite in the known world; the closure gives the magic time to replenish within the stones, and the city does depend on this magic to stay afloat, but no mines means no exports means plenty of lost jobs.

The Lhusu Mines — Recently closed, but no less appealing to explore. Security to get in is practically nonexistent: the only deterrence to going in is the fiends. Four-winged blood-sucking bats and undead skeletons have quickly overtaken the tunnels, prepared to kill anything that ventures into their territory. Why go in at all, you ask? Plenty of other people have tried, leaving behind money and weapons with their corpses.

Merchant's Market — The marketplace is bustling all day, selling weapons, armor, clothing, magic potions, antidotes, jewelry, house wares, and all sorts of things.

The Cloudborne Tavern — The main base for passengers who want as much time off the ship as possible. The tavern is full of colourful characters and boasts ludicrously cheap pints. A bulletin board has posters for bounty hunters, the most noteworthy of which seeks people willing to deal with the fiends that occasionally spill out of the mines, or, if at all possible, someone who can fix the paling that used to the keep the fiends at bay.

YEAH HI HELLO. I'm Xel and I am new and so happy to be here and I will be bringing you...

...Timothy Lawrence, aka "Jack," aka Doppelganger 21-C from the Borderlands series! ✨ (EDIT: Now with more IC INTRO!)

Every time I try to pitch the "short version" of this mf's deal it's still ridiculously convoluted, so I will try my best here:

Tim used to be a normal theatre himbo with a mountain of student loan debt, but the gig he took to pay it off wound up deleting his old identity and transformed him into a de facto clone of the guy responsible for ruining basically everyone else's lives. While in Jack's employ, Tim helped Jack wreak all kinds of havoc and destruction in pursuit of more and more power. My man has killed a... whoooooole bunch of people, though he'll be the first to tell you he didn't do it voluntarily. Hopefully as he serves his sentence here, he can stop claiming he was "just following orders" and will learn to take ownership of his own actions.

At his current canon point, Timothy's tyrannical old boss has been dead for seven years, while Timothy himself has been imprisoned inside a space casino with a bunch of feral gangs who really want him dead. The Peregrine's a paradise by comparison, so even though he's sure the Navarch picked up the wrong Jack (after all, he's innocent!! mostly.), he's actually a little worried about being sent back home.

Super looking forward to CR here! 🙏 Feel free to add me at [plurk.com profile] piasora and/or tevinter#3439 if you'd like to knock ideas around at some point!

+1 Walking Battery

findthefuture: (Default)
[personal profile] findthefuture
[community profile] returnjourneyooc
Hello everyone, I'm Jo and I am bringing all five feet of Blue Sargent as a new Warden. At 18 (she promises she's only a summer away from turning 19!) with strong feelings on morality and right vs wrong, and zero combat experience she is an excellent choice to be a Warden.

About the canon: The Raven Cycle is a YA urban fairytale. If you haven't read it yet, I recommend it whole-heartedly. Unfortunately, Blue is taken from right at the end of her canon so there will be spoilers. (Let me know if you want me to avoid them in threads with you, but consider this your spoiler warning for her in general and this post specifically!)

About Blue: she is the only person in her immediate and extended (blood-relation not required) family who isn't some brand of psychic. She has a power, but it is largely useless to her; in essence, she is a walking battery/amplifier for the powers of others. Spirits get LOUD around her. And she can't hear a thing.

All of her life she has fought really hard not to want things she can't have and all of her life she has failed pretty miserable. At the time I am taking her from, she has found her true love and is on her way to a great adventure.

She's a little idealistic, quite judgmental, and a LOT motivated to graduate someone. Her wardening style is going to start out gentle and then grow up from there. (Let's talk about what kind of things your character needs and what you want to put them through. Blue won't be cruel for the sake of being cruel, but cruel to be kind is an option.)

She is going to be pretty pumped about the starship stuff and she still has that teenage black/white view of morality (though one might argue there's a lot of actual grayscale being shoved into that sharp binary) so that should be fun. Ever been judged by a teenager? That's Blue for you. She can be prickly, argumentative, and quick to anger, but there's this softness to her. She grew up in good soil, water with lots of love and sometimes that just shines through.

C'mon. You know you want to let her help your character become a better person. Let's aim for forgiveness and making good choices!

About me: I work-from-work, and have been through like 75% of this pandemic. I am CST (CDT right now) and my cutoff for tagging on a weeknight is 9 PM 'cause have to get ready for bed. I married an elementary school teacher so our alarm goes off hella early in the morning!

I'm a slow tagger. Mostly because I haven't learned how to not tl;dr and it takes time to knock out five paragraphs. I swear I am working on it. I tend to tag in order of which tags are the easiest for me to knock back; When I don't, I tend to get too blocked, and end up tagging nothing. So I am so sorry if you see me tagging out of order, that's just the only thing that works for me. Believe me, it's never you or your quality (sometimes the best tags are the ones I save for last just because I want to make sure I'm in a headspace to do them justice). Never feel bad if you have to drop threads or want to handwave CR. We're all adults here, as 17-year-old Gansey would say. We have work and real life obligations and we are tired. I get it.

Feel free to add me ([plurk.com profile] peerpressure) on plurk for real time plotting. I don't often plurk about things but when I do it's mostly pet pictures, memes or work-whines I can't post to Facebook because I friended too many work people. Enticing, I know!

I am excited to start Blue off with the simulation and then have people get to know the real her after the fact once everyone is back on the Peregrine.

Hello!

I figured it would be good to ask this in one clear place! When March pairings were posted and the wardens were sent limited inmate files, Viktor suggested the wardens share these files amongst themselves. Can everyone please comment on if they shared their inmates' limited files, in whole or in part, with the other wardens at large?

I'll update this top-level to reflect which files were shared and link back to them so we know whose CRIMES we can know about. I skimmed through the post to see who seemed to agree but if I misunderstood, let me know and I'll fix it. /thumbs

Thank you and here's to the adventures ahead!

Hello! My name is Rana (she/her) and I come bearing Alina Starkov of Shadow & Bone (the Netflix version but I've read all the Grishaverse books). She's coming in as a warden, but I am all about leaning into the many things that make her a potentially bad warden which I elaborate on here. Basically, she's supposed to be a savior but that's a lot of pressure, ya know?

She's also a teenager who doesn't always think through all of the natural consequences of her actions before she does them. Her idea of a good escape plan is just to smuggle herself away by hiding in an unknown trunk and she very earnestly suggested two hats as a good disguise. She's sassy and honestly spent more of her life as the troublemaker than the authority figure, so this is a weird change of pace. Who thought a feral teen girl would make a good warden anyway (it'll be fun, I promise).

I'm on plurk [plurk.com profile] hellbender but I am happy to plot exclusively via OOC comm, Discord, or PMs since my plurk is a mix of RL and RP. Also I love Annihilation so clearly I chose the correct time to hop on board.

SIMULATION: ANOTHER BORDER

"I am walking forever on the path from the border to base camp. It is taking a long time, and I know it will take even longer to get back. There is no one with me. I am all by myself. The trees are not trees the birds are not birds and I am not me but just something that has been walking for a very long time..."

Introduction

April 1st – April 7th, 2022

Welcome to our first simulation.

Simulations are large events where the Peregrine transforms into another location completely. All passengers live out new lives, intended to give inmates a look at other walks of life and wardens new experiences through which to examine their own. Functionally, these take the form of complete AUs and players can form whatever backgrounds and CR as they see fit. A backstory log will go up tomorrow, set before a simulation begins, so players can voicetest this version of the character, thread out important background events, and so on. During this time, Peregrine life will continue as normal; it hasn't entered the simulation yet! But it'll give players a head start on ironing out the specifics of their AUs.

Unlike ports and squalls, a simulation affects every character aboard the ship. Players can arrange a mission, seminar, furlough, etc that conveniently falls during the event, if they do not wish to participate for any reason. Characters will have advance warning of what they are going into.

After the simulation, characters will remember big moments of their AU lives, like an intense, felt-so-real dream that lingers with you for a few days. Skills or knowledge/expertise specific to the setting do not carry over.

You can use this post for any OOC plotting! If you have any questions about the event, please ask here. You can familiarize yourself with simulation basics on our events page.

Premise

Twenty years ago, a strange phenomena overtook an undisclosed area of Florida coastline. It manifested as a metaphysical border, visible only as a shimmering halo. Animals, humans, vehicles, radio signals, internet, waves — anything that crosses the border is lost. Nothing has ever returned, but year by year, the border creeps forward, engulfing more and more of the land. It could be decades before it reaches the nearest city, but considering it has eluded all understanding thus far, it feels like time is running tight.

Every few years, the government sends new recon parties into "Area X", hoping this team will find the source of the phenomena, return, or simply establish communication from within. And it's time to send in another crew.

Knowing there is likely no return, all crew have a reason for venturing into the Area. Some people long for escape from their everyday lives, while others are so desperate to fight their circumstances that they would risk whatever lies on the other side. Nothing to lose. Everything to gain. The will to survive is a fickle thing.

Every person will find something different within Area X. On the surface, it's a wild zone. Any subsumed human structures are overgrown with hybrid plants; the underbrush, swamps and woods infested with strange animals. Deeper inside, experiences may vary. Time passes erratically. The nature within the halo is aberrant, but maybe you are, too: most of the natural world doesn't carry baggage. Alligators don't have emotional wounds. Key deer don't contemplate their mortality. Manatees don't ruminate on history.

Human feelings and turmoils are what's unnatural here, and with everything else being stripped away, what do you do with what's left?

What will it be? Change, or self-destruction?

The OOC Stuff

In Plain Speak

Oh shit, an unknown organism has taken over the wetlands and is breaking down the lifeforms within it to their base parts. Your character, once they enter its domain, are subject to this, too. This goes all the way down to their atoms; Area X is like a prism, where DNA and matter bounce and interact with each other to create new things. Characters might even experience blending with each other.

So what are they when the rote parts of their lives are stripped away, and all that's left are the base elements of their being? Do they fight it or do they accept it? Do they confront their grief? Their traumas?

Characters who confront some part of themselves and change (even in small ways!) survive to escape Area X, and in turn wake up on the Peregrine. They can also remain in the Area to help others.

Characters who refuse to change choose self-annihilation. They "die" of exposure to the Area, whether by losing their minds and becoming part of nature or physically perishing. When they wake up on the Peregrine, they'll experience side effects associated with dying aboard the ship, aka dizziness, confusion, nausea, and impaired motor skills.

Suggested Character Roles

Researcher — Sent in to study Area X. Perhaps it's as an accomplishment or prestige; perhaps it's for money.
Military — Security, to protect the researchers. Perhaps it's about the money, perhaps it's about proving something, perhaps it's a too-pervasive sense of duty.
Explorer — Unaffiliated with the government crew, you've sought entry to the Area all the same. Perhaps it's the unknown, perhaps it's the forbidden, perhaps it's a really bad livestream choice.
Lost — Part of a previous research mission or ill-advised venture, you went mad inside the field. Somehow you survived; perhaps you melded with the local flora and fauna, perhaps you're a shell of your former self.
Wildcard — Whatever you'd like, whatever you imagine. That goes for everything!

Environment

Florida — The terrain is black pine forests, reedy swamps, marsh flats, natural canals, and ocean coast.
Area X — All organisms within this zone are mutated, DNA melded into a primordial soup. It's produced animals that share genetic material with flora, other fauna, and even humans. Plants may grow in the shape of human effigies. Humans may take on these traits, too, over time.
Animals — Strange hybrids of species native to Florida, including but not limited to: alligators, panthers, manatees, sea turtles, snakes, burrowing owls, key deer, owls, lizards, black bears and bob cats.
Ruins — There are frequent signs that the area used to be perfectly ordinary. There are ruins of a small town and all its trappings, but it looks like it has been derelict and abandoned for much longer than the Area has existed, perhaps by hundreds of years.
Corpses — The remains of previous researchers and explorers may be found scattered within, sometimes in unexpected states.
