Have you ever seen someone caught in a lie? Some people capitulate immediately, dishing out apologies with the truth. Some people get embarrassed, flush red, stumble over their words to correct themselves. Some people get defensive. Some people try to bargain.

Some people get angry.

Now might be one of those times.

On January 20th, the Navarch will announce that the Peregrine is navigating a minefield of asteroids. Nothing to worry about: The ship has shields for this exact purpose. Lights may flicker and powered doors may briefly refuse to open as the ship diverts power to the forward shield. Passengers may feel slight rumblings, a gentle vibration of the floors under their feet, or see a trembling in their water glass. They might even hear the sound of the asteroids meeting the shield, like a persistent drip in a metal sink. All very routine for space travel.

But one asteroid is going to get through. Just a small one, barely the size of a basketball. Just big enough to punch a little hole in the side of the ship. The ship's bots will hop to repairing it, also very routine, but it might take a bit to pinpoint the particular problem.

Starting on January 21st, passengers on the ship may feel anger when caught lying or when lied to. A lie may not be obvious — maybe it's subtle, maybe they don't know the other well enough to know it's a lie, maybe it's a lie of omission. Up to you! But they'll feel some form of anger, however that might manifest. Snippiness? Lectures? A fistfight? Outright violence?

Effects are rolling; if you'd like a character to be affected at one time but not another, that's fine! Adapt as you see fit. An event log will go up on Friday.

How close would a char (a warden)(it's William) be able to get to the hole in the ship and MORE IMPORTANTLY the robots making repairs?

Would chars making a flight in the ship's vicinity experience effects?

Also, I've been trying to find a thread to drop this in the background of so that it's on the official rp record, but he has part of a smashed cleaning bot hull that may or may not be an ""improvised knife"" so this could be a good chance for that to come up.

Ok, so, Theo lies all the time, but no one here knows him well enough to know he's lying. Also he already has a short temper. So I was thinking it would actually be more entertaining if he wasn't effected by this event, but he interacts with other people who are. Even though they don't know he's lying until they start getting angry. Would anyone be up for that?

HI HELLO I am playing That One Annoying Guy Who Is Actually Pretty Honest (…through conscious effort, not naturally) but he’s not above occasionally omitting things or massaging the truth.

A Quick Guide to Calling Him Out:

He will be evasive about stuff he thinks would fuck with inmates—whether that’s his unvarnished opinion of them (sometimes you need to be told you’re pathetic, sometimes it’s just not productive!!!), or the fact that their consciousness is currently housed in a little ball hidden somewhere on their body, or the extent to which his own experiences as an inmate fucked with him. He doesn’t really have any ~big secrets~ though he tends to second-guess his own intentions, so he may shy away from revealing DEEP DARK SENTIMENTAL AND IDEALISTIC THOUGHTS (general questions about his motivations may trip him up as well). Or also.......I don't know WHY you would ask him about his childhood or his love life, but.......that.

He is noooooooot very demonstrative when angry—he’s used to bottling everything up, I’m talking repressing for years. EVENTUALLY there may be an explosive tirade about someone (would love to get to that point), but in the meantime expect passive-aggression, mean jokes, and maybe him just shutting down. On the other hand, straightforward aggression from someone else kind of relaxes him (he likes when people are emotionally demonstrative!!!) so?????????

SHIT I’M LOOKING TO DO:

- I’d love for him to try to break up/mediate a fight and accidentally make it worse (mediation, after all, involves A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF LYING I mean diplomacy)
- He’s currently staying in the inmate dorms with Rhys, so he’s available for fighting/attempted or successful theft (he keeps his gun on his person, but like…….I’m not against someone slipping a sleeping pill into his food or something)/bedtime stories idk
- I am gonna let him ~vaguely intuit~ that this is honesty-based after a while, at which point he will go after people and try to wring some truths out of them heh heh heh
- He will also be hanging out with the robots
- ALSO William, Rhys, and Aki are going to be taking one of the Avros out to fly around the ship (once the asteroids are gone)...I didn't have him invite anyone else because I can't handle more than three people in a thread, but if you want to have your char sneak into the loading bay and spy on them/maybe even stow away???? as long as I DON'T HAVE TO DO A FOUR PERSON THREAD WHICH I WILL INEVITABLY FLAKE ON AHAHAHA/hear rhys bragging about it and ask questions/take pics of the avro/whatever!!! I'm happy to spin more plot out of this

Okay so far I have a few ideas:

1. Doing Carolyn's network suggestion because Loki starting a debate with the entire ship sounds about right

2. Loki being a lot more upset by the asteroids and turbulence than he expected to be because he has a much more recent memory of Thanos' attack on the Statesman at the moment. I'm thinking this'll mostly manifest in him being jumpy and then lying and saying he's fine, so that works lmfao

3. I don't have a specific plan for this exactly but I was looking for a way Loki might distract himself and was intrigued by the low-res SIRE simulations so: what if Shitty Thor? Idk what that looks like yet but the idea of Loki having to explain why he's talking to a glitching failure of his brother could maybe turn into him lying reflexively tbh. NO IT'S NOTHING IDK IT JUST MADE THIS WEIRD VIKING WHO KEEPS SINKING INTO THE FLOOR oh god did i just invent skyrim

Alex is more likely to be caught in lies by evasion. I'd love more CR though, and I probably will have him watching the asteroid field from the observatory b/c HOLY SHIT is that interesting.

He is likely to get angry/annoyed at being lied to, but it really depends on how much the person pisses him off if they're going to get punched or not. He also does NOT trust easily.

silco is not going to be super on his game thru this due to the whole violent rage thing, but after the fact, will probably try to reverse engineer what people were lying about.

i'm happy to have him draw right or wrong conclusions, but if there's anything you'd like him to bug alex about later, this could be a good opportunity to seed that

Rhys, who has become prone to uhhhh "bending the truth" in his time here will be suffering the effects of this. The good news is that I plan to have most of the harm he does be self directed, the bad news is > oh no his face and B. sometimes it won't be and he does have a robo-arm for punching (even if its not his dominant arm)
